Sean Scully, Doric air and Darkness

Sean Scully

Saint Nicholas Church in Caen

In his 50-year career, Sean Scully has created a body of work that has been extremely influential in the development of a new contemporary abstraction. A fusion of European painting traditions (particularly Impressionism) and the specificities of American abstraction, his work combines a certain pictorial drama with immense visual pleasure. The intimate and the monumental will form the axis of Sean Scully's exceptional project for Normandie Impressionniste. | The Church of Saint-Nicolas in Caen, with its breathtakingly pure Romanesque beauty, will be the perfect setting for a spectacular intervention composed of large-format paintings and monumental sculptures. The exhibition will also include the church's adjacent, dormant cemetery. | This project, open to all (free admission), will be a celebration of one of the greatest American artists' deep love for the birthplace of modern painting.
