"Like the three musketeers, there are four Impressionists from Rouen, and like the three musketeers once more, they are young, ardent, liking a combat" wrote the art critic Eugène Brieux in 1889. In this way, he presented Léon-Jules Lemaître, Charles Angrand, Charles Frechon and Joseph Delattre who freed themselves from academic painting and formed the first generation of the School of Rouen.
