Impressionnism

The Invention of Étretat

Eugène Le Poittevin, a Painter and his Friends at the Dawn of Impressionism

07.14 — 11.15

Print
Eugène Le Poittevin brought together in Étretat his artist friends and helped to turn this coastal village into a focal point for open-air painting during the third quarter of the 19th century. By taking an interest in the fishermen and then bathing enthusiasts, he broke free from classic and historic themes, opening the way to impressionism. The works on display unveil the steps in this precursory pathway.
