On the occasion of the exhibition of Janaina Tschäpe, presented until September 27, 2026 at the Telmah Gallery, within the Aître Saint-Maclou in Rouen, under the curatorship of Philippe Platel, the artist looks back on her approach in a video made as part of the series Impressions of artists.
German-Brazilian artist Janaina Tschäpe develops a multifaceted body of work across painting, photography, video, and sculpture. Her work explores the connections between the body, landscape, and the natural world, giving rise to images where forms appear to be constantly transforming.
Inspired by water, plants, and organic forms, her paintings immerse the viewer in worlds on the border between reality and imagination. Outlines dissolve, colors blend, and landscapes seem to move, revealing hybrid and undefined forms. Rather than faithfully reproducing the world around her, the artist seeks to capture its sensations, atmospheres, and emotions.
This approach resonates with the research of Claude Monet, particularly his work on light, water, and the transformations of the landscape. Like the Water Lilies, Janaina Tschäpe's works invite a contemplative experience where the gaze is gradually guided by the variations of color and light.
In this video, Janaina Tschäpe discusses the sources that inspire her work and explains how she constructs these imaginary landscapes, combining observation of the natural world with personal interpretation. She also shares her approach to using paint to create spaces open to the imagination, where everyone can project their own feelings and memories.
