Mika Ninagawa – Wildflowers

To mark the centenary of Claude Monet's death, the Normandy Impressionist Festival invites Japanese artist Mika Ninagawa to take over the facade of Rouen Cathedral with Cathedral of Light – Wild Blossom, a creation made with Hiroaki Miyata.

One of Asia's most renowned photographers and filmmakers, Mika Ninagawa has been developing a instantly recognizable visual universe since the 1990s, characterized by saturated colors, pop compositions, and a central focus on nature and flowers. Her work resonates with the garden theme at the heart of this year's festival and with the world of Claude Monet.

For this monumental projection, the artist juxtaposes photographs taken in the garden at Giverny with urban and pop images inspired by Japanese culture. The work also draws on Monet's collection of Japanese prints, establishing a dialogue between the Impressionist legacy, Japanese aesthetics, and contemporary culture.

Rouen Cathedral provides a particularly symbolic setting for this creation. Monet painted it on numerous occasions, studying the variations in light and atmosphere that transform its appearance throughout the day. In turn, Mika Ninagawa makes the monumental facade a space where colors, light, nature, and images are transformed into movement.
