150 years after Claude Monet and other painters of his time stayed in Honfleur, Julien des Monstiers, in turn, casts his gaze upon this iconic landscape of Impressionist history. As part of the Normandie Impressionniste residency program, the contemporary artist has taken over the Ferme Saint Siméon, a renowned plein air painting site frequented by Monet, Boudin, Courbet, Sisley, and Corot, among others.
Painter and draftsman Julien des Monstiers develops a body of work situated between figuration and abstraction, in which the pictorial material occupies a central place. Through meticulous work involving superimposition, textures, and layers of paint, the artist constructs compositions where forms emerge, transform, and sometimes elude the viewer.
Through these paintings, the artist pays particular attention to the variations of light, colors, and forms of the seascape. Without seeking a literal representation, he explores its sensations and impressions, making painting a space where observation and matter meet. This exhibition thus becomes part of the unique artistic history of Honfleur and the Ferme Saint Siméon, while offering a contemporary perspective on the landscape.
