That's a wrap for an edition that thrilled Normandy!

The 6th edition of Normandie Impressionniste concluded on September 27, 2026, with an estimated 1.5 million visitors. Over four months, the festival presented 75 artistic projects across 43 municipalities, bringing together 60 contemporary French and international artists around the theme "A Possible Garden".

Organized to mark the centenary of Claude Monet's death, this edition represented a new chapter for the festival, with, for the first time, a program entirely dedicated to contemporary art. Exhibitions, public art installations, live performances, and educational projects offered fresh perspectives on themes associated with Impressionism while affirming a program focused on contemporary art.

1.5 million visitors, more than half of whom came from outside Normandy

With 1.5 million visitors in four months, this 6th edition confirmed the attractiveness of the festival in a deliberately shorter and more concentrated format than that of 2024. In 2026, 75 projects brought together a comparable volume of visitors over a reduced period of two months.

This increase in visitors was also accompanied by a change in the origin of the audience. Local visitors accounted for 47.3% of total attendance, while 43.3% came from other French regions and 9.4% from abroad. Overall, national and international visitors represented 52.7% of all visitors, compared to 37% in 2024.

The festival continues to grow, attracting audiences from across France and abroad, while maintaining strong ties with the people of Normandy. The trend towards younger audiences, initiated during the previous edition, has also continued.

75 projects for 43 municipalities: a program designed on a regional scale

The 75 projects in this edition were spread across 43 municipalities, confirming the festival's territorial dimension. Museums, art centers, monuments, gardens, churches, public spaces, and heritage sites hosted projects designed in dialogue with their host contexts.

This regional expansion was accompanied by a significant renewal of the programming. Of the 60 invited artists, 70% were emerging artists, while the program featured an equal number of male and female artists. Furthermore, 80% of the works presented had been created specifically for the 2026 edition.

These figures reflect the choice made this year to prioritize artistic production and experimentation, giving artists the opportunity to develop new works in contact with the Normandy territories.

Key moments that contributed to the success of the edition

Several projects particularly stood out in this 6th edition.

  • The opening weekend of May 30th and 31st brought together nearly 25,000 spectators for two major events. In Rouen, "Wild Blossom" on the cathedral, accompanied by an electronic music evening, attracted over 10,000 people. In Vernon, "Radiance of Spring " drew nearly 15,000 spectators to a daytime pyrotechnic show featuring almost 1,000 drones.
  • In Le Havre, the dialogue between Claude Monet and Ai Weiwei also resonated with a wide audience. Presented for the first time in France, Water Lilies accompanied the Monet in Le Havre at the MuMa, which welcomed over 100,000 visitors. This made the exhibition the most popular of the museum's temporary exhibitions.
  • In Rouen, more than 20,000 visitors discovered the mechanical flowers of the Meadow , a hanging garden by the Dutch studio DRIFT, presented in the Sainte-Croix-des-Pelletiers church on the occasion of its reopening.
  • In Caen, the projects of Diana Scherer at the Saint-Nicolas church and of Céleste Boursier-Mougenot at the Frac Normandie also illustrated the diversity of proposals in this edition, between installation, sculpture, participatory creation and transformation of spaces.

These few figures demonstrate the diversity of attendance levels for programming, from major events bringing together several thousand people to projects installed in more intimate cultural and heritage venues.

A first edition that is 100% contemporary

With 60 artists, including 70% emerging artists, and 80% new works, this edition has affirmed a new direction for Normandie Impressionniste.

The festival has chosen to make contemporary art the primary vehicle for a renewed dialogue with the Impressionist legacy. The centenary of Claude Monet's death, celebrated on December 5th, has served as the guiding thread for this program, not by attempting to reproduce his work but by inviting artists to reinterpret the themes associated with it.

The garden, the landscape, the light, the water and the living have thus been approached through very diverse artistic practices, from immersive installation to photography, from sculpture to video and from performance to participatory works.

The emphasis placed on original works and emerging artists also reflected the festival's commitment to supporting creation and offering audiences projects specifically designed for the Normandy region.

This attendance confirms the festival's role in the attractiveness of the region

The deployment of 75 projects in 43 municipalities, combined with national and international attendance representing more than half of the audience, confirms the regional dimension of the festival.

By investing in cities, museums, monuments, gardens, landscapes and public spaces, Normandie Impressionniste has helped to circulate audiences throughout the region and to associate artistic discovery with the discovery of territories.

This dynamic is based on the mobilization of the communities that have supported the project since its creation. The festival thanks its nine founding members: the Normandy Region, the Rouen Normandy Metropolitan Area, the Eure Department, the Seine-Maritime Department, the City of Rouen, the City of Caen, the City of Le Havre, Caen la Mer and Le Havre Seine Métropole, as well as its member municipalities, which contribute to the deployment of the program throughout Normandy.

Sponsors and partners mobilized

The realization of this edition also relied on the mobilization of around twenty sponsors and professional partners, an increase compared to 2024.

Normandie Impressionniste thanks its patrons and private partners, including ETRIA, Caisse des Dépôts, AXA, Sanef, Engie, Japan Airlines, Yoshino Gypsum Art Foundation, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in France and the Mondriaan Fund, whose contributions have supported the realization of artistic projects and their deployment in the territories.

The festival also thanks its professional partners and service providers, including JCDecaux, SNCF Gares & Connexions, MTCA, Aktua Prod, La librairie L'Armitière and Hangar Cult, as well as all the companies and technical teams involved in the production, communication and implementation of the program.

The partners in reception, accommodation and gastronomy also contributed to the experience offered to visitors, alongside the museums, art centers, monuments, associations, communities and cultural structures that hosted the 75 projects.

Artists, project leaders and professionals mobilized

The 60 artists featured in this edition are central to this review. Normandie Impressionniste thanks them for the projects developed in Normandy and for their participation in this first edition entirely dedicated to contemporary art.

This programming also represented a significant amount of production work, made possible by the involvement of curators, project leaders, teams from cultural venues, producers, technicians and professionals who supported the artists from the conception to the presentation of the works.

The festival also thanks the mediation and reception teams, whose work helped to support audiences in discovering the projects throughout the four months of programming.

A collective mobilization

This 6th edition was based on the mobilization of a range of actors: local authorities, elected officials, artists, curators, museums and cultural structures, project leaders, patrons, partners, service providers, technical teams and festival teams.

Normandie Impressionniste thanks all of these contributors for their involvement in the preparation and production of this edition, as well as the media that have supported its visibility to regional, national and international audiences.

Finally, the festival thanks the 1.5 million visitors who travelled through the Normandy territories, discovered the 75 projects and helped to bring this 6th edition to life.

With 1.5 million visitors, 75 projects, 43 municipalities and 60 artists, this 6th edition confirms the ability of Normandie Impressionniste to unite cultural and institutional players around a common project, to support contemporary creation and to strengthen the cultural attractiveness of the Norman territories.
