On the occasion of " Points de Suspension", presented until August 30, 2026 at the Frac Normandie – Espace de Caen, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot revisits her artistic approach in a video produced as part of the " Impressions d'artistes".
A major figure on the international contemporary art scene, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has been developing a unique body of work for several decades, in which sound becomes a true creative material. Using everyday objects, natural elements, or mechanical devices, he designs autonomous installations that evolve in response to interactions, movements, and natural phenomena. His works invite the viewer to experience a sensory exploration of space, where listening, contemplation, and participation converge.
With "Points de Suspension" (Suspended Points), the artist transforms the courtyard of the Frac Normandie – Espace de Caen, imagining a "crystal garden" composed of twelve swings topped with church bells. Echoing the history of the former convent, this installation transforms visitors' movements into a constantly evolving sound composition. Between architecture and landscape, interior and exterior, the work reveals the acoustic and poetic qualities of the space, while giving essential importance to chance, wind, and time.
This installation is part of Traversées sonores (Sound Crossings), a project developed by the artist across several iconic sites in Normandy. Sound swings can also be discovered at Côte Sainte-Catherine in Rouen and in the park of the Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet, where they engage in a dialogue with the landscapes, heritage, and unique characteristics of each environment.
In this video, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot revisits the genesis of " points de suspension" (suspension points ) and shares his approach to creating open-ended artworks, whose form is constructed through the gestures of visitors, the resonances of the space, and the variations of the living world. He thus invites us to a different way of inhabiting the landscape, where sound becomes a means of perceiving our environment in a new light.
Project carried out in collaboration with the Frac Normandie and in partnership with the Lisieux Museum Hub and the City of Rouen.
