Plant Impressions – From Léopoldine to Claude

Plant Impressions – From Léopoldine to Claude

Vacquerie House – Victor Hugo Museum

In the museum garden, owned by the Department of Seine-Maritime, a creation of "plant impressions" brings painting, landscape and memory into dialogue, highlighting three little-known works by the artist, from the collections of the Marmottan-Monet museum: White Clematis, The Boat and Roses, one of his last paintings.

These choices resonate with the location. They feature themes dear to Monet—gardens, flowers, river landscapes—while the Villequier site bears the imprint of the memory of Léopoldine, Victor Hugo's daughter. The whiteness of the clematis evokes the freshness of the departed young woman. The empty boat recalls her absence, while the roses echo the rose recently created in her honor.

Reproduced on large tarpaulins, the paintings extend onto the ground as flowerbeds, like reflections in the Seine bordering the garden. Evolving with the seasons, this composition invites strolling and contemplation, offering a sensitive and poetic experience of Impressionism.
